Kestrel 35 from the front

Kestrel 35

A 35 mm f/1.4 manual-focus lens.

Full frame · Sony E and Nikon Z

The iris, stopped down, seen through the front element

Eleven blades, rounded.

Curved blade edges keep the opening close to a circle as you stop down, so out-of-focus highlights stay round for longer.

The focus ring and its distance scale

270° of focus throw.

0.3 m to infinity is spread over three-quarters of a turn, which gives fine control when you focus by hand. The distance scale is engraved in metres.

The lens taken apart: eight glass elements in front of the barrel

Eight elements in six groups.

Two aspherical surfaces and one extra-low-dispersion element correct the spherical aberration and colour fringing a fast 35 mm is prone to.

The E-mount version, with its ten gold contacts

Electronic contacts.

The lens reports aperture and focus distance to the camera, so both are recorded in EXIF and in-body stabilisation sets itself for 35 mm. Shown: the E-mount version.

Bokeh

Change the aperture.
Watch the lights.

Out-of-focus highlights take the shape of the opening: near-circles wide open, with the blade edges showing as you stop down. Point lights in focus grow rays, and an odd number of blades gives twice as many, so eleven blades draw twenty-two.
